Turmeric or Golden milk is the perfect grounding, warming autumn night drink. Drink this Golden Milk before going to bed to help promote a deep and sound sleep.
When you boil milk it forms tryptophan and that is a precursor to serotonin. That makes you feel relaxed and happy. ☺ This could be just what you need to help you through the challenges of self-isolating and social distancing.
The spices, turmeric and ginger are great for your nervous system; cinnamon helps you cope with seasonal changes and is great for the respiratory system and cardamom supports a healthy circulation.
What’s not to love about Golden Milk? Here’s how to make 1 cup – but that is never enough so adjust to your family’s need:
Take 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom and
1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric
Add to 1 cup of milk.
Heat to boiling in a saucepan, whisking it together for a light and fluffy drink.
When it cools a little, you can stir in 1/2 teaspoon of raw honey.
- Bring the mixture to the boil – this changes the molecular structure and so makes the milk easier to digest (cold milk is heavy and difficult to digest which is why some people think they have problems with milk). Importantly, boiling the milk releases the tryptophan that can increase brain serotonin and improve your mood and well-being (Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, v32(6); 2007Nov).
- Make sure to use non-homogenised milk. Avoid any processed or long-life milk or store-bought nut milks. (Try making them yourself, they’re not that hard). Goat’s milk is a good option for Kapha constitutions or those looking to manage their weight because it’s lighter than cow’s milk. Or you can make your with half milk and half water.
- Do not microwave milk or mix milk with other foods.
